New report on innovative material proves the potential of a sustainable fashion future

The circular economy of the future starts with the material innovators of today. With support from H&M Foundation, Fashion Positive has just released its first Emerging Material Innovators Report, highlighting the most promising innovators working towards a circular future.

Material innovation can tip the fashion industry into the circular economy. H&M Foundation has been working together with Fashion Positive – the initiative from non-profit sustainability organization Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute – for one and a half year, with the goal of making the fashion industry circular to create a more sustainable world. Through our partnership, we strive to connect the most promising innovators to the resources they need to scale.

Investors to take notice

The aim with the recently launched Emerging Material Innovators Report, is to encourage brand partners, along with the investor and accelerator community to take notice and support the financial and business goals of the innovation it will highlight in each edition. The concepts featured in this and subsequent reports have been evaluated and selected by Fashion Positive and H&M Foundation using the requirements of the Cradle to Cradle certification standard.

“The report is a unique product that addresses the gap between the innovator and the industry, where everything also becomes public for anyone to use.”

— Erik Bang, Innovation Lead at H&M Foundation

This first report, which will be released every quarter, introduces twelve innovators – including H&M Foundation’s very own Global Change Award 2018 Early Bird winner, Tandem Repeat. Tandem Repeat have found self-healing characteristics in squid genes which can be used to make a material that is biodegradable and 100% recyclable through an eco-friendly and low-cost process.

“We are very excited to work with Fashion Positive and to release the first of a quarterly public report of circular and validated material innovation. The report is a unique product that addresses the gap between the innovator and the industry, where everything also becomes public for anyone to use”, says Erik Bang, Innovation Lead at H&M Foundation.
