H&M Foundation make donation to flood victims in India

The southern Indian state of Kerala is reeling under one of the worst natural disasters in nearly a century. Heavy monsoon rains have left the state devastated, with landslides and flash floods killing over 370 people the last one month. In response to this, the H&M Foundation is donating 100,000 USD to Save the Children.

The Government of Kerala reports that over 21 million people are affected by the floods, including seven million children. One million people have been displaced from their homes. With this donation Save the Children will focus on both immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation, with the initial goal of rebuilding lives of 8,000 families.

What’s important in a situation like this is that children keep having access to education. School buildings have been adversely impacted by the floods, ranging from damage to bathrooms, drinking water facilities, playing grounds and school material. Save the Children are helping re-building schools so that children’s education doesn’t suffer. They are also distributing education support kits as well as setting up so called child friendly spaces, where the children can play, learn and feel safe. 2,500 boys and girls in the worst-hit communities of Wayanad, Allapuzha and Pathanamthitta will be reached with these interventions.

"Ensuring a zero lag in children's access to education is our utmost priority. We deeply appreciate the donation from H&M Foundation which helps us make this possible.”

Bidisha Pillai, CEO of Save the Children in India

“We are responding to the humanitarian crisis in Kerala with restorative and rehabilitating efforts, reaching children in the most cut-off locations. Ensuring a zero lag in children’s access to education is our utmost priority. We deeply appreciate the donation from H&M Foundation which helps us make this possible”, says Bidisha Pillai, CEO of Save the Children in India.
