H&M Foundation provides USD 250,000 in emergency relief after Typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia
In response to the devasting impact of Typhoon Yagi, H&M Foundation is donating USD 250,000 to the Red Cross to support aid efforts in Vietnam, Myanmar and the Philippines.
After initially starting as a tropical depression before developing into a Super Typhoon equivalent to Hurricane Category 4, it made landfall in northern Vietnam on 7 September with wind of over 240 km/h, making it Asia’s most powerful storm this year.
On its passage, Typhoon Yagi affected 31.5M people and caused destruction in some parts of the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Thailand causing extensive flooding across Southeast Asia. Prolonged rainfall, soil saturation, and the sheer magnitude of the typhoon have exacerbated the already vulnerable situations in many communities. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced forced to take temporary shelter in evacuation centers, huge numbers of houses and buildings have been destroyed/heavily damaged, as well as significant loss of life reported across the region.
Through an integrated approach, immediate emergency relief to victims of flooding aim to meet shelter, basic needs, as well as Health and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) needs.
For the short to medium-term recovery, the aid operation will expand to include activities across multiple sectors, such as:
- Migration support, and disaster risk reduction and preparedness.
- Livelihood restoration
- Shelter reconstruction
