Let us present the Early Bird Winner of 2019

The research collective Synflux created Algorithmic Couture, a digital system that can reduce waste through artificial intelligence and traditional Japanese straight cut patterns.

Sunflux - GCA Early Bird winner 2019 (1)

A digital system for pattern making, based on artificial intelligence and traditional Japanese straight cut patterns.

Synflux is a research collective focused on design research and fashion design. Their innovation is using AI combined with zero waste pattern techniques that have history in Japanese straight cut patterns. Conventionally, the use of curve pattern cutting on square fabrics have been the main focus for the creativity of fashion designers, also based on the will to adhere to the dimensional body types of the customers. But as a result, 15% of the fabric is wasted.

This team is utilizing machine learning algorithms to generate optimized fashion patterns, also based on body size and customizable design parameters. The optimized pattern cutting techniques that are generated are comprised of rectangles and straight lines, allowing for optimization of the fabric usage. The innovation also aims to make production more effective by using this pattern technology on demand, rather than creating a mass amount of stock. Thanks to this system, waste as well as energy usage can be substantially reduced.

“For the past 70 years, we have been accustomed to coping with the standardized system in fashion that normalizes our bodies into different categories. But by utilizing 3D scanning technology alongside CAD software, we are able to optimize garments to the unique body types of the user, independent from the prêt-à-porter system.”
