USD 100,000 to monsoon victims in Bangladesh

Monsoon rains throughout Bangladesh has caused extreme flooding and landslides with water levels exceeding those expected during the annual monsoon season. In response to this the H&M Foundation donates 100,000 USD to the Red Cross.

Tangail district, Bangladesh, 2019. Monsoon rains have caused severe flooding in Bangladesh. One third of the low-lying country is under water with at least 4.7 million people affected and more than 135,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed.

An estimated 7 million people in 28 districts throughout Bangladesh are affected by the flooding, with 600,000 houses damaged or destroyed, hundreds of people killed, over 280,000 displaced, and 163,000 hectares of crops damaged. Currently one third of the country is underwater. With the monsoon season ongoing there is a strong possibility that needs will further increase and the outbreak of water-borne and other communicable diseases is a serious concern.

“We are truly grateful for the H&M Foundation’s contribution to the Red Cross and Red Crescent’s efforts in Bangladesh.”

Minna Ljunggren, Interim International Director at the Swedish Red Cross

The donation by H&M Foundation will provide life-saving and recovery support to roughly 150,000 people comprising 30,000 families. It will respond to the needs of the most vulnerable people affected by the floods; the ones who have lost their homes, their livelihoods, and the ones who have been displaced by the flooding.

“Our immediate response is focusing on providing water, sanitation and hygiene  and the support will be adapted to different group’s specific needs, with a focus on women, children and marginalized groups. We are truly grateful for the H&M Foundation’s contribution to the Red Cross and Red Crescent’s efforts in Bangladesh”, says Minna Ljunggren, Interim International Director at the Swedish Red Cross.
