Continuous heavy rainfall and subsequent flash floods impacting 11 districts in Bangladesh have resulted in loss of life with many injured or missing according to recent reports. As per the Needs Assessment Working Group (NAWG), 4.94 million people including 2.06 million children and adolescents have been affected by the floodings.
The life-line services, communication and infrastructure systems have been largely impacted and communication has been largely disrupted due to high level and heavy flow of water, inundated roads and uprooted trees blocking the roads. Power supplies, access to clean water and electricity has been compromised in most areas and medical facilities are overwhelmed.
The intervention by Save the Children aims to implement urgent humanitarian assistance to support the children and their caregivers of Noakhali district, where more than 2 million people are affected.
Emergency response actions include:
- Identification of most vulnerable children and their families in Noakhali district
- Psychological support
- Family reunification for separated children
- Distribution of Cash BDT 6,000 each to a total of 1,500 affected families to allow children and their families to prioritize their biggest needs and purchase e.g. food, medicine, hygiene essentials, shelter materials
