In response to the severe flooding and widespread humanitarian impact in Ecuador, the H&M Foundation is donating USD 100,000 to the Ecuadorian Red Cross to help deliver immediate relief to affected communities. Since January 2025, Ecuador has been grappling with a growing emergency caused by prolonged heavy rains, which have triggered devastating floods and landslides across several regions. The destruction has left communities submerged, homes destroyed, roads and infrastructure damaged and basic services severely disrupted. On top of this, a recent oil spill in Esmeraldas Province has occurred due to a landslide. This has further strained access to safe water for many.
The Ecuadorian Red Cross is targeting support for over 176,000 people in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Guayas and Manabí, where the impact has been especially severe. With the support from the H&M Foundation, the Red Cross will provide integrated assistance in key areas such as shelter, water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and multi-purpose cash transfers.
The response will also include mental health and psychosocial support, protection services, and community engagement to ensure that the assistance provided is safe, inclusive and centered on the needs of affected individuals – particularly those who are most vulnerable.
In brief
Since January 2025, Ecuador has been experiencing severe flooding and landslides due to an extended rainy season, causing widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and essential services. The crisis was intensified by an oil spill in Esmeraldas Province in March, contaminating key rivers and threatening access to clean water for around 300,000 people.
The Ecuadorian Red Cross is responding with humanitarian aid for over 176,000 people, focusing on shelter, clean water, hygiene, cash assistance, and community-based recovery.
